The Art of Bushin Kenpo

Professor David Wilson founded Bushin Kenpo Kai on 17th December 2002 although our roots date back until September 1999 when David, (with the blessing of his good friend and Instructor O Sensei Andy McGill) founded the North Kent Academy of Martial Arts, (NKAMA.)

At that time, the NKAMA was based at a local grammar school in Dartford, Kent. The classes were doing quite well for the first 2 years until the school decided to raise its already expensive fee for the hire of the hall. This coupled with the schools policy regarding closing during the lengthy school holidays led to David struggling to pay the hall fees.

Over the next six months, our student base dropped to seven regular participants, and by mid December 2002, there were only six of us training on a regular basis.

Our annual membership fee was due in January so David decided to look for a more practical and user-friendly venue where he could continue to teach his five dedicated and hard working students without constantly having to cancel classes.

Tim Gridley, (one of David's students and close family friend) had recently built a private dojo on his land in Swanley, Kent. Tim called together the remaining students and it was suggested that David should use his private dojo to continue these six loyal students training and treat it as his own.

David accepted Tim's offer but said that if he was to continue teaching these students the classes would have to be private lessons for at least one year. The main reason for this was that David wanted to develop a counter attacking system based on his experience of the many arts he had studied over the years and he wanted total commitment from his remaining students.

Stuart Rogers had been training under David for 12 years, and the other four students at least 3 years. David promised that he would give them all 100% and at least nine months personal tuition, but in return he expected 100% back and regular attendance.

With David’s private tuition and a lot of hard work from his students a small but true budo family was formed.

In October 2003, David and his five loyal students opened their first official Bushin Kenpo Kai dojo in David's home village in South Darenth, Kent. Since then our student base has grown at a steady rate, just the way Professor Wilson likes it. Respect and rank are earned in our dojo, not demanded and we all work together for each other’s benefit, as a true family should.

Update:

In 2007our Bushin Kenpo system was recognised as a legitimate martial arts style by the International combat Martial Arts Union.
